Randy Fenoli makes dreams come true on his wildly popular reality show, Say Yes to the Dress. But it almost didn't happen! When we caught up with the fashion guru, we learned that he's not a huge fan of most reality television, but when presented with the concept of Dress, he couldn't turn it down! We also learned about what shows Fenoli does like to watch in his downtime, and his desire to return to the glorious days of disco!
GGM: Tell me a bit about Say Yes to the Dress. How did it start?
RF: I didn’t want to be on the show to be honest! I’m not a reality TV fan because I think they set people up and sort of dumb our society a bit! However, I think our show is completely documentary style. They don’t throw us any lines or set anything up, and I’m very proud of the show that I do, otherwise I would not be on it. I don’t do anything that doesn’t follow my “Three E’s: Educate, Elevate, and Empower.” I didn’t want to be on my show, but I’m proud to be on it now. It is the number one bridal show for a reason. It’s about human emotion and family dynamics, and I think everybody can relate to that.
GGM: What other shows do you like to watch?
RF: I don’t watch a lot of TV to be quite honest, and when I do watch TV, I want it to be totally mindless TV. When I say mindless, I mean King of the Hill, Family Guy, American Dad, but I have to say, the classics like Golden Girls I cannot get enough of! They were brilliant for their time and they’re still brilliant today. When I watch TV, it’s TV like that I don’t have to think about.
GGM: So animation and older women?
RF: Well, that’s kind of scary when you put it that way! But I think what it is, is that because my schedule’s so crazy, to get caught up in a series, I’m too afraid to commit.
GGM: You mentioned your crazy schedule. What are some things you like to do when you get to zone out.
RF: If that ever happens I’ll let you know! But I actually took my first vacation in six and a half years recently. I went to the Cayman Islands and we rented a condo on the beach and did absolutely nothing! I actually played in the sand, swam with the stingrays! They call me “Randy the Stingray Wrangler” because I love swimming with them. Takes my mind away from everything.
GGM: So I have to ask, who are some of your favorite wedding dress designers?
RF: Oh gosh, I can’t answer that anymore! I used to have favorites, but now when I see a girl, I see a designer who fits with that girl, and for that reason they’re all a little bit my favorite. But I will say I do love designers who truly create art, and not just the ones who knock off others. I really love designers with the talent of creating as you would a movie or a show and that’s why I think some of these reality TV shows are kind of false talent.
GGM: Sounds like it’s the creative process that gets you going. What about in the music world? What kind of music do you like to listen to.
RF: Well I must say I am stuck in disco! I miss Studio 54! I wish it was still around. Pop music, too. My assistant downloads all my stuff for me.
GGM: Thank you for meeting with us.
RF: It was my pleasure. Thank you for having me!
