You probably know Tia Mowry from the classic nineties sitcoms Sister, Sister, and Twitches, or the hit show Instant Mom. (Or, if you're like me, you know her best from the a capella Christmas classic, Mistle-Tones).
But fans in the know understand she's much more than just an actress:
she's a mother, fashionista, and now reality chef! It
was a total pleasure talking to Tia about the show, how she inspires
positivity in her fans, and her favorite things.
GGM: Now I read something on Entertainment Tonight that said Sister, Sister might be coming back? Can you tell me about that?
TM: Yeah! What I was saying was just that the desire is there. It’s just if we have the time! My sister’s on a show, and I’m on a show, so if time frees up—my manager has said, Tia, if this is something you wanna do, we can make it happen! That’s what that’s about.
GGM: Everyone is of course buzzing about the Sister, Sister possible reunion, but I am personally invested in if we are ever gonna get a sequel to Mistle-Tones?
TM: (Laughs) Now let me tell you! I freaking loved that. I had so much fun doing that movie, it was a sin! To have a sequel, man, I’m ALL in. Hands, feet, toes, everything.
GGM: Tia Mowry at Home premiered recently. For those who haven’t seen the show, what’s it like?
TM: Basically, Tia Mowry at Home is a cooking show, but what’s so unique and special about it is that it’s not just your regular cooking show. There’s a reality aspect to it. 50% of it is cooking, and 50% is reality based. So you’ll get to hang out, meet my friends, meet my dad, see me do things I love to do, like yoga and grocery shopping. The type of food I cook is along the lines of hearty foods, but it’s healthy and practical for the busy moms and women and people in general that want to have home-cooked meals.
GGM: What made you want to do a cooking show?
TM: Basically to inspire! I wanted to inspire the moms out there, as I’m a mom myself. We have a community, whether at parks or at school, and we need encouragement. We need help. We feel guilty about not making healthy meals for our families because we live busy lives. Some of us get fast food because we live busy lives. Our generation is more educated about how food can be harmful, and knowing this information, Moms out there can feel lost and not know what to do. So I wanted to be that example and inspire!
GGM: If you had to pick your best recipe, which would it be?
TM: I always go to my husband for that. He really likes my spaghetti and meatballs! I make these turkey meatballs with oatmeal and spinach and milk. It’s nice and moist. I sauté them and let them cook in the tomato sauce, add wine in there, and it’s hearty and healthy.
GGM: I understand there’s a third season of Instant Mom planned. What do you think the key has been to this show’s success?
TM: I think the key to the show’s success is basically relating to families. This is a show about kids getting used to their stepmom and the stepmom getting used to her kids. This is what’s happening in our generation. Sometimes we only hear about the negative experiences that happen with this, but this is a funny approach that shows you how it can work. People are interested in that.
GGM: What are your favorite TV shows?
TM: Because my life is so crazy, I don’t sit down and watch too much TV, but the one show I am hooked on is Game of Thrones. I have to say I just got hooked on it so I’m only on my third season! So I’m staying off Twitter and the blogs so I don’t ruin it for myself.
GGM: Good luck!
TM: So Game of Thrones and True Blood, my all time favorite. It didn’t matter how tired I was, I would watch True Blood with bloodshot eyes to see what happened to Sookie and Bill. I have to say, I was devastated at the series finale. When (spoiler omitted), I was like, you gotta be freakin’ kiddin’ me!
GGM: What's the last movie you saw you really liked?
TM: The last movie I got to see was Home, with my son. That was the movie that starred Rihanna, and it was phenomenal!
GGM: Are there any songs you’re jamming right now?
TM: I may be a little late on this, but I love Nicki Minaj. She’s just amazing. There’s one song I really like, off her new album, called "Trini Dem Girls." Whenever I put it on in the car, I’m like, let’s go.
GGM: Favorite restaurants when your family goes out?
TM: I really love Madeo, one of my favorite restaurants. They have an amazing Bolognese dish there that I don’t think anyone can beat. One of my favorite restaurants in New York would have to be Catch. Whenever Corey and I are in town, we stop by.
GGM: Do you have a favorite piece of clothing?
TM: Do you want me to give you five?
TM: Okay: number 1, my leather jacket by Michael Balenciaga. It can be worn with everything. It can be worn with overalls, skirts, a dress. I absolutely love it.
Another item I’m coveting would have to be my Balenciaga shoes. I have studs I wear with everything. It’s a wedge. You can wear it with shorts, a dress, and jeans. They’re black with gold studs on them, so sexy, so cool.
My Stuart Weitzman shoes. I really like them. They’re an open toe shoe that goes with everything.
Also, my Birkenstocks! I feel like they get a bad rep, but they’re so a trend right now! And I’m happy about that because if I can be comfortable and fashionable at the same time, the Birkenstocks are the way to go.
My One Teaspoon denim overalls! I really think overalls are making a comeback! They’re comfortable, on trend, and there’s something about them that’s classic. You can pass it down to your daughter and not be afraid of it going in and out of style.
I also love my Balmain blazer. I think every woman should have a blazer, whether you’re a businesswoman, entrepreneur, a blazer is something you should invest in. I’m telling you, my Balmain blazer has gotten a really nice run. I wear it all the time.
The last thing I’m coveting right now are vintage Ts, vintage college shirts or Rolling Stone Ts. I think they are so stylish right now and I really love them.
GGM: Last thing you splurged on?
TM: Oh my gosh. I know what it is! It was a lot of money, but it was the suit I wore on the Today show. It’s a plaid tailored suit from Band of Outsiders, and that was a very expensive suit but it was so, so worth it!
